Url rewrite of dynamic php page not working in both directions -

my web page largely dynamic. figured out how rewrite these urls (apache server).

the first page did https://www.roguefab.com/category.php?category=tubing_benders

the clean url page https://www.roguefab.com/category/tubing_benders

if navigate www.roguefab.com/category/tubing_benders, works perfect (shows content , clean url). if navigate directly or link dirty url, shows dirty url. why? shouldn't show clean one?

my rewrite code every other 1 i've seen: rewriterule ^category/([0-9a-za-z_]+) category.php?category=$1 [nc,l]
